Getting Over Your Embarrassment of IBS
by Sandra Kim Leong
The condition IBS is very embarrassing for many people. Embarrassment is a part of life, however, so it is important that you learn ways to get over the embarrassment so that you can live your life in a happy and productive way.
For example, if you decide that you are too embarrassed to carry around your medication and you leave the medication at home, then you could possible have an IBS attack, which can cause an even greater embarrassment. Get over your embarrassment and take your medication as the doctor has ordered. Keeping your medication on hand will allow you to live a more fulfilled life because you will not have to worry as much about having an IBS attack, which can cause embarrassment.
If your physician has said that you need to eat a bland diet, then that is what you need to do. If you go out with your friends to visit the newest restaurant and all they have is super spicy foods, then you may be in a quandary. You may want to be like your friends and have the spicy foods and cannot help feeling embarassed. Or you may simply feel embarassed that you have a restrictive diet and that you have to order your meals seperately. Your embarrassment over meals can lead to embarrassment over a bathroom incident if you decide to ignore the confines of your IBS diet.
You should learn from these examples so that you will find ways to cope with your embarrassment. Do not let your IBS cause embarrassment. Just keep in mind that what you are doing is for your health and this may help relieve some of the embarrassment.
Some people may find that their IBS often causes them to be late to gatherings and other events. Learn to not be embarrassed about this by letting your family and friends know about your medical condition. Then they will know that if you are late, you are having a bout of IBS symptoms and will understand. Embarrassment goes away when an issue is brought into the light by telling others about it. When they know that you have this problem, then they will understand and work with you.
Do not be ruled by embarrassment. Know that you will have times that you are not going to be able to eat what everyone else is eating and there are times that you are going to be late, etc. Learning more about how to control your IBS is much more beneficial to your time than spending time being embarrassed.
